Thomas the tank engine first debuted on UK television in the 1980s and since become a classic that has been translated into 19 languages and broadcast in over 130 countries.

Thomas the Tank Engine was created by the Rev. W. Awdry about 50 years ago for his son Christopher; the original stories can be found in the "The Railway Series." In 1984, Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends was recreated by Britt Allcroft and brought to us through the PBS program Shining Time Station.

The stories are set on the island on Sodor in a traditional English countryside setting during the steam engine era. Children identify with the characters because of the bright colours and their exagerated personalities.

About Thomas

Thomas is a cheeky, fussy little engine. He often gets into scrapes, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas' life and he's soon bustling about again, playing his part in the yard and on his very own branch line, of which he is extremely proud.
